Nursery and Reception

At King's, pupils follow the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum in Nursery and Reception classes revised in 2012 by the Department for Education:

Within the EYFS framework, the seven areas of Learning and Development are:

  • Personal, Social & Emotional Development
  • Communication & Language
  • Physical Development
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Art & Design

However, in an independent school setting, we also have the freedom to be able to introduce our children to exciting additions to the curriculum such as specialist Music, German, ICT and Sport.

Learning is planned and assessed carefully by our Early Years teachers and staff to ensure coverage of objectives within all these areas. A range of teacher-led and  activities initiated by the child provide opportunities for staff to observe and extend children’s learning. We share with parents the goal of maximising every aspect of each child’s learning experience, and in achieving this, we recognise the importance of establishing a trusting and honest partnership with parents from the outset. Children are gradually introduced to a more structured curriculum throughout their time in the Early Years' classes, with pupils introduced to a phonics programme to aid their early reading and writing, regular ICT input and tasks covering all areas of the curriculum.

Nursery pupils benefit from an introduction to Pre-Preparatory School life in preparation for their move to Reception class at 4+. Children have access to the school gymnasium for PE and movement sessions, have lessons with our German specialist to introduce them to language-learning, make use of the ICT suite for some activities and have lunch in the dining hall with older pupils. They also attend some school assemblies and Cathedral services with the Pre-Preparatory School children, and take part in some events such as Sports Day.

Pre-Preparatory School

In the Pre-Preparatory School, the curriculum is based upon the revised Primary National Curriculum introduced in September 2014. Each morning is devoted to English and Mathematics, but, in addition, all 4+ children have a daily lesson in German taught by a fully qualified German teacher. This is a unique initiative through which we aim to lay early foundations for a positive attitude to learning languages as well as building up cultural awareness and tolerance.

The weekly time-table for each pupil also includes:

Art/Craft/Design & Technology, Religious Studies (Divinity), Geography, History, Information Communication Technology (ICT), Music, Physical Education/Games, Science, Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education (PSHEE).

Teachers plan and lead sessions for their class of children, and are focused on offering a broad and balanced curriculum, covering all areas of learning. Learning objectives are clearly identified for each session, and individual targets are set with every child on a half-termly basis to help children (and parents) identify the next step in their learning. Pre-Preparatory School children also benefit from specialist teaching by the Preparatory School and Pre-Preparatory School Director of Music and a Colourstings specialist. Chldren are also taught by Preparatory School PE staff in Years 2 and 3.
