To help celebrate World Book Day, King’s Rochester Pre-Preparatory School welcomed a visit from acclaimed children’s illustrator Axel Scheffler on Wednesday 1st March.
German born Axel, best known for his work alongside writer Julia Donaldson on ‘The Gruffalo’ and ‘The Gruffalo’s Child’, as well as family favourites ‘Room on the Broom’ and ‘Stick Man’, was also visiting King’s Rochester as part of the School’s German-English enrichment week.
Students, who have taken daily German lessons since age 3, interviewed Axel in German before a dual language reading of ‘The Smartest Giant in Town’. Axel then kindly signed copies of his work for all students and drew them their very own doodle!
Headmistress of King’s Rochester Pre-Preparatory School Mrs Catherine Openshaw said ‘It’s been amazing to welcome such an iconic illustrator to the school. The children have been so excited and so too have all the parents and staff”.
To continue this memorable occasion, all pupils are dressing up as one of Axel’s own characters on World Book Day itself.
