King’s Rochester pulls away at the NJIRC

Twelve Senior School pupils entered the National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships (NJIRC) held at the Lee Valley Athletics Centre on Friday 11th March 2016. The team comprised Sam Herling, Pierre Steyn, Christopher Walji, Charlotte Moody, Leon Kennedy, Charlie Deininger, Caspian Smitherman-Cairns, Lucy Witts, Alexander Zemek-Parkinson, Fiona Thomson, William Humphris and Sebastian Sandford-Hopper.

All team members competed in individual events for their respective age group and seven of the boys competed in the ‘Boat Race Relay’. Lucy also joined a composite team for the Girls’ Boat Race Relay. The effort and enthusiasm of the whole team was excellent and competition was tough with over 2500 competitors. Nevertheless, King’s performed extremely well with all pupils finishing well up the rankings and posting personal bests and Caspian posting a personal best to win second place in his event. The day was particularly successful given that we are primarily a rowing school which requires a good power to weight ratio in the boat.

And in more rowing news...

William Humphris won his J16 1x and will be in the JIRR squad for the Single and J16 8. Congratulations too to Fiona Thomson who won the Novice Double. Well done WIll and Fiona!
