We are delighted to announce that King's has been successful in its bid to become part of a three year Learning and Performance Network with the Royal Shakespeare Company and The Marlowe Theatre, Canterbury. The Learning and Performance Network is the RSC's long-term partnership programme with schools, communities and theatres across England. Established in 2006, the programme works through creating partnerships of schools with their local theatre over a three year period to bring about a significant change in the way young people experience, engage with, and take ownership of the work of Shakespeare. King's is one of only a handful of schools in the South East to have been accepted into the network.
The School will be working in partnership with a cluster of regional schools to improve young people’s experience of Shakespeare. We aim to establish a sustainable centre of excellence of learning with, and through, theatre and Shakespeare in Kent and Medway.
Both the RSC and The Marlowe Theatre are dedicated to working with King's to help deliver excellence in learning that can be applied across the school curriculum. This will include regular INSETS for members of Drama and English teaching staff. It will also include a number of exciting opportunities for students to perform and engage in workshops with leading Shakespeare professionals in our school. Our students will also contribute to the national celebration of Shakespeare’s work on the 400th anniversary of his death on The Marlowe Theatre stage, alongside the Royal Shakespeare Company in Spring 2016, as well as a contribution to performances in Stratford-upon- Avon in year three of the programme as part of the final celebration festival.
By being part of the Learning And Performance Network our pupils will further enjoy opportunities to access the best in Shakespeare performance live at The Marlowe Theatre. There will also be several opportunities to have RSC productions streamed live into our school. The programme will also offer extensive privileges and access to further learning and performance opportunities, through The Marlowe Theatre’s visiting partners such as Frantic Assembly, Kneehigh and The National Theatre.
This is an exciting learning opportunity for all our students here at King's Rochester!
