Lower Fifth Rowers gave a great performance in their first Regatta

The Junior Rowing squad entered two crews at the Thames Valley Park Regatta in Reading on Sunday the 24th June.

For most of them this was their first experience of a rowing competition and we picked a perfect day for rowing - sunny and calm albeit rather hot.

The event is for Juniors, mainly schools and this year attracted an entry of more than 600 crews. Our crews were:

  • Oliver Hunt, Pedro Gomes, Richard Northridge, Harry Tuffey and Archie Caithness in a J15 coxed four.
  • Rupert Walker, Archie Caithness, Ben Swan, Joshua Dickin and Riley Jenkins in a J15 coxed Quad.

The event is a knockout competition with 3 crews in each race from a stake-boat, standing start. Part of the challenge is to manoeuver successfully onto the stake-boat which both crews managed perfectly.

Although both crews did not win their respective heats they performed well finishing the 500-meter course with no mishaps, collisions or crabs and represented the school admirably. Given the limited rowing experience of most of our squad, some of whom only started rowing this term, this was a great performance.

Most importantly the squad all enjoyed the day and now have a taste for future events.
