Nursery & Pre-Prep School

Welcome Video

Mrs Catherine Openshaw, Headmistress of
King's Rochester Nursery & Pre-Preparatory School

At King's Rochester Nursery and Pre-Preparatory School we pride ourselves, not only on the calibre of our teaching and the quality of our provision, but also on the level of individual care and attention we give to each child to ensure that they have a happy and positive start to school. Our youngest learners take the first steps of their learning journey in a well-resourced, bright and vibrant, purpose-built school set within the School's beautiful grounds.

Children are at the heart of all we do here. This is a crucial time in the life of a child as they take their first steps towards independence, learning and being a valued member of a wider community.

Our School is a vibrant, exciting place to be. Our children come through the door in the morning beaming, greeted by me - and our much-loved School dog, ‘Mitzi’ - and leave with the same smile at the end of the day. King's offers a fun, varied and productive day and our dedicated staff provide a rich and stimulating environment where curiosity and enthusiasm to learn are fostered. The solid foundations of ‘learning for life’ are laid here.

We pride ourselves on our 'family' School where our Christian foundations support our whole community and instil care, kindness and thought for one another. King’s is very much a ‘School for Life.’

I am certain that this tour will give you much information about King's Nursery and Pre-Preparatory School, but it cannot compare to seeing it in action! As soon as it is possible again, it would be my pleasure to welcome you here and show you around our School, so that you can see for yourself.

Preparatory School

Welcome Video

Mr Tom Morgan, Headmaster of King's Rochester Preparatory School

King’s Rochester Preparatory School is a stimulating, purposeful and caring community within which children are supported to discover their strengths and talents and to develop as well-rounded and thoughtful individuals. Generations of parents have delighted in the real sense of achievement their children have experienced through our outstanding specialist teaching, small class sizes and the individual attention that they have received, both academically and pastorally.

Our broad and balanced curriculum enables children to build towards excellent academic achievement whilst ensuring that their broader skills of communication, teamwork and leadership are explored through the sporting, musical, dramatic and extra-curricular opportunities available. We encourage children to throw themselves into school life but are mindful of ensuring that their time is balanced and that they are not overloaded.

The Preparatory School is large enough to provide a full range of options and facilities, but small enough to foster a nurturing and caring atmosphere. Our Christian community welcomes children from a wide variety of backgrounds and faiths and as a Cathedral Choir School, our aim is that our girls and boys will grow happily in their understanding, knowledge and confidence, underpinned by the positive values which shape our School.

My talented staff and I will do all that we can to see that your child settles quickly and fully embraces life in the Preparatory School. Enjoy your virtual tour today and we look forward to welcoming you in person very soon.

Senior School

Ruth (Upper Fifth) - Life at King's

A great education prepares young people of all abilities and with a multitude of diverse talents for a successful and fulfilled life.

At its heart is the achievement of academic potential which comes from developing a love of learning and King’s is rightly proud of its academic record. Academic rigour and qualifications are central - but a real education goes way beyond this and develops the skills which enable young people to make the most of all of their abilities and trains them for life.

We believe strongly that, it may be the academic results which secure you the interview, but it is the person who walks through the door who gets the job. Extensive co-curricular activities give pupils the opportunity to develop life-skills, self-confidence and the ability to listen and work as part of a team. Together with the development of a strong set of values, these form the bedrock of rounded, confident individuals.

At King’s, we support, nurture and develop these skills from the youngest children at the beginning of their learning journeys right through to those ready to embark on their adult lives.

We hope that you enjoy your virtual tour today but please do come and visit us as soon as possible and find out what makes King's special. We would be delighted to welcome you into the King's family.

Sixth Form at King's

Tom (Upper Sixth) - Life at King's

Entering the Sixth Form is an exciting time. You are about to embark on the most exhilarating and challenging period in your academic career so far. This is a time when you can really focus on the subjects of your choice, pursuing your interests and creating the building blocks for your future university study or career choice.

A Level study is characterised by small groups, a more discursive approach and a more mature relationship with your teachers. You will have increased levels of independence and, with a guiding hand from your teachers, be responsible for managing your own workloads both within and outside of school, ensuring you develop essential time management and organisation skills for your future life. These changes are visibly characterised by the transition to wearing a business suit rather than a school uniform, of being able to use the Sixth Form Common Rooms for independent study and accessing the High Street during your lunch hour.

Focusing on three or four A Level subjects allows a depth of study that you have not yet experienced. You will work closely with your teachers to ensure you gain both the knowledge and the academic skills required for these Level 3 qualifications. Furthermore, you will grow as an individual, gaining wider world experience and life-skills through CCF, our ‘Hands’ group which helps out in the local community, the Charities Committee and Careers advice.

Your academic progress will be supported with the King’s Extend Programme which focusing on supporting your development in six key areas; Leadership, Responsibility, Service, Research, Personal Challenge & Careers in order to ensure you have the tools you need for the next stage of your life. Included within this is enrolment in The Ivy House Award, a leadership programme specifically designed for Sixth Formers to support you in preparing for your extraordinary life.

Our well-connected Careers Department will enable you to approach the next steps in your life with confidence, having experienced a interview day and met a range of employers and business people, making valuable connections and gaining valuable skills whilst still at King’s. The Sixth Form is also the time when you have the opportunity to take on positions of responsibility and leadership in School and have the chance to become role models for younger pupils.

Making the most of these opportunities, whilst continuing to take part in team sports, drama, music and enjoy the breadth of experiences that the Sixth Form at King’s has to offer ensures a rich and enjoyable finale to life at school. The Sixth Form is a unique time of academic and personal development, both of which are fully supported here at King’s.

I look forward to meeting you in person very soon and to welcoming you into the Sixth Form at King’s Rochester.

Boarding at King's

Tatenda (Upper Sixth) - Life at King's

King's Rochester boarders are very special people!

We talk about ‘boutique boarding’ here as, in a boarding community of under 60 pupils, everyone makes friends very quickly - and across all age groups too. Our boarders are one big family with both Houses sharing meals, celebrations and leisure activities.

We have two boarding houses on site; School House can cater for up to 34 boys and is run by Housemaster (HsM), Mr Metcalfe, whilst St Margaret's House caters for 24 girls and is run by Housemistress (HsM), Miss Pembroke.

Each house offers comfortable accommodation and lots of space, with common rooms, study areas, computer rooms, music practice rooms and a fully equipped kitchen which is replenished daily with fruit, cereal, bread, milk and snacks. Boarders eat their main meals in the dining halls adjacent to the Houses and often choose to eat together making lunchtime an ideal opportunity to catch up with friends.

We welcome boarders from the local area, the wider UK and across the globe. They are aged between 11 (Year 7) and 18 (Upper Sixth). All international pupils at King's live in boarding houses with British students and so they have the opportunity to improve their English outside the classroom too as well as to enjoy a true British boarding experience.

All our boarders enjoy a strong loyalty to ‘House’ and throughout the term will don their beloved House Purple to compete against the Day Houses in sports fixtures, music competitions and at events such as debating and general knowledge.

Living away from home is a huge step for any child to take. All boarders at King's are guaranteed a very warm welcome from their HsM who will be there for them every step of their boarding journey. HsMs will always answer all of your questions, ease any concerns and ensure that Boarding at King's is the best time of your life.

Living independently can be scary at first, but our boarders do settle in quickly, helped both by their House Staff and their fellow boarders. Living with your friends nestled in the cobbled medieval streets of Rochester next to the beauty of the Cathedral and the Castle, they tell us, is the perfect location to develop, gain in confidence, be happy and grow.

King’s prides itself on its broad co-curricular programme and there is always something to do. Boredom is never a problem! Boarders can take part in Before- and After - School clubs, play in a games team, take to the stage in our annual Drama production or learn a musical instrument and join an ensemble.

At weekends, many day trips are planned to local attractions, theme parks, London, local beauty spots and sites of historical interest as well as to local sports games, restaurants and festivals. There is always something to do!

We look forward to showing you around boarding at King’s as soon as possible after we all get back – but, in the meantime, enjoy our virtual tour!
