So many clubs, so little time.
In addition to offering a broad academic curriculum with excellent music, drama, language and sporting opportunities, the pupils at King’s Rochester can also choose from a whole host of clubs and activities outside the classroom, both at lunchtime and after the end of the School day.
Each term there is a different set of clubs and activities from which Pre-Preparatory pupils may choose. Although a school choir is a permanent fixture in the club lists. They vary according to the interests of the teachers who are running them and we also try to establish a club if children identify a new and appropriate area of interest. There are opportunities for children to have fun and try out new sports and be physically active in free-of-charge after-school activities such as Maypole Dancing, Running, Football, Circuits and Multi-Sport Clubs run by Pre- Preparatory School staff.
Other clubs may include Ocarina, Wellbeing, Chess, German, Puzzles and Games, Photograhy, LAMDA, and Lego. Pupils can also join Ballet lessons, Cheerleading, Yoga or Martial Arts classes during their time in the Pre-Preparatory School for a small additional fee, as well as individual or group instrumental tuition (from Year 2).
Within the School there are also opportunities to join the School Council or Eco Council in order to affect change within the school environment. Every Year 3 pupil becomes a ‘School Captain’ for a term and is asked to take responsibility for various aspects of school life.
The programme of intensive education is balanced by a wealth of extra-curricular activities and clubs, all designed to develop every aspect of the child whilst preserving his or her childhood before entering the Senior School.
We hope that every pupil will join at least one club or activity. These mainly take place after School, but some are during the lunch break. A full list of these and their timings is recorded in the School diary/calendar and staff use the clubs and activities board in School to announce any changes. Pupils have opportunities to participate in the following clubs or similar during the course of the year:
Clubs and activities may vary each term and those on offer have recently included Art, Athletics, Ballet, Chess, Cricket, DT, Ecology and Gardening, Film Club, Hockey, LAMDA, Lego, Maths, Minecraft, Needlecraft, Netball, Photography, Puzzle Club, Rugby, Running, Soccer and Swimming.
There are also numerous musical activities during the course of each week which are listed in the termly calendar.
The academic, sporting, dramatic and musical aspects of school life are complemented by a raft of activities designed to provide as wide an education as possible for our pupils. We consider the participation in activities or clubs outside of class to be an important extension of a child's school experience, at any age. The academic and sporting aspects of School life are complemented by other activities, such as the Combined Cadet Force (CCF), social work in the community, The Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme and clubs and societies which all enhance the academic tradition of the School.
Each term a varying range of clubs and extracurricular activities is held in the Senior School, either at lunchtime or after School until approximately 5.30pm. Extra curricular clubs and activities on offer include Art, CCF Shooting, Choir, The Duke of Edinburgh Award, ICT, Maths and Science. There are also frequent pre-season and after-school training sessions for Rugby, Rowing, Hockey, Netball, Cricket and Tennis.
Learning through experience away from School is central to any pupil's time at School. A wide range of academic and sporting visits and trips take place throughout the year, both in term time and during holidays. Trips include, Art Exhibitions, Classics lecture days, Theatre, CCF Training, Skiing, Economics trips, Geography Field trips, Classics trips, Cricket Tours, Choir tours, Pupil exchanges and Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme Expeditions (Bronze, Silver and Gold Levels).
